The post 9 Epic Resources for Students of Brand Storytelling appeared first on Social Media Explorer.
]]>One of my pet peeves, by the way, is that presenters neglect to tell stories even when they are on panels about storytelling. The same goes for bloggers. To really understand let alone explain this topic, you need to start crafting stories yourself and share them at home, at the office, in writing, and on the stage when the opportunities arise. But here’s the good news — this is well-trodden territory and resources abound including the 9 featured below.
There are lots of types of storytelling and it helps to understand the main ones before you approach the branded variety. Story Engineering is geared for budding novelists, focusing on the “6 core competencies of successful writing” including Concept, Character, Theme, Story Structure, Scene Execution and Writing Voice. This will give you a great foundation especially if you grasp the difference between an Idea and a Concept.
This is the bible for aspiring screenwriters and even those who’ve succeeded in the profession many of whom attended McKee’s legendary screenwriting workshops (which btw we are using workshops for starting projects) . McKee is a master at showing how all the elements fit together and the critical relationship between structure and character. You’ll also enjoy the references to 100’s of films that you’ve seen and will have a new appreciation for why they were so memorable.
No studio in history has cranked out as many hits in a row as Pixar that not only succeeded with global audiences but also with typically irascible film critics. Their secret – if the story is flawed the movie will be too so they spend months if not years making sure the story is perfect before starting production. This book spells out their formula in language even we marketers can understand!
If you’ve never experienced a Great Course, an extensive series of recorded college classes by acclaimed professors, this particular one will convert you for sure. Professor Hannah Harvey also happens to be a professional storyteller herself, making this more like a visit to The Moth than a classroom. Importantly, you learn some of the nuances of oral storytelling versus the written forms like novels and screenplays discussed above.
For the about the cost of a large double shot cappuccino from your favorite coffee bar, this little book packs a terrific punch, offering 23 storytelling tips derived from the over 30 of the most popular TED Talks. If you have a speech to give in the near future, this resource will be particularly helpful as the author breaks down how to wow an audience while providing examples that are sure to inspire.
Having worked our way from novels to film to public speaking, this book will help you craft your business story and importantly, offer guidance on how to spread the word. Rich with examples of entrepreneurs that used stories to propel their companies to new heights, you’ll recognize some of the critical storytelling elements from the other genres we’ve already covered. The difference is that these authors offer specific exercises to help you discover and refine your personal or professional brand story.
If you’ve read any book by Seth Godin, you know that he always offers great examples of how this or that business found a unique way to cut through. This book continues that pattern only all of them point back to a fundamental premise that stories — great stories — carry the day for all sorts of brands in a wide range of categories. Although Godin’s book is less prescriptive than StorySelling, it does offer further inspiration to refine your brand story if you haven’t already.
My friend Alan Hart has a terrific podcast series that features interviews with a number of top Chief Marketing Officers. The episode that I recommend in this context is the one with Clay Hausmann, CMO of Aktana. Unlike most CMOs, Clay actually took time off to train as a screenwriter and while that adventure didn’t yield an Oscar, it did lead him to a story-driven strategy brief that he breaks down in detail on the podcast. (If you want a copy of how Hausmann’s approach played out for Beats, just email me.)
And finally, I would be remiss if I didn’t call your attention to at least some of the content I’ve published on storytelling. First up are my extensive interviews with Douwe Bergsma, CMO of Georgia Pacific, who is a big proponent of the power of storytelling and has reorganized his department around this skillset. Then I’d encourage you to listen to various Renegade Thinkers Unite podcast episodes including the ones with Chandar Pattabhiram of Marketo (#12), Mayur Gupta of Spotify (#14) and Meredith Kopit Levien of The New York Times (#18). Or better yet just subscribe on iTunes, Stitcher, Overcast, iHeartRadio or Messenger since there will be more on storytelling in episodes to come!
Final note: If you have any great resources on brand storytelling, particularly in the area of story-driven creative briefs, please let me know. This is definitely a collaborative journey!

]]>The post The Broken Record of Social Media Advice appeared first on Social Media Explorer.
]]>There is both a good and a bad to this type of event. It’s may seem bad because I’ve been asked to talk about social media strategy to start the day, then end the day with a big takeaway. I’ve given these two talks over and over for the past couple of years. Sure, I change up a little here and there and revise case studies and the like. But if you saw me talk on these topics last summer, the talks on Thursday won’t be holistically different.
But for me it is also good. Not in the sense that I don’t have to prepare much – I still stress over little details, update pieces of the talks and, where appropriate, write new jokes. But it’s good in the sense that this audience hasn’t been given the advice yet.
Many in the social marketing space sound like broken records these days. Would we all like to move on to other topics? Certainly. But we don’t because we see, day-in and day-out, that the advice we’ve been giving either hasn’t been heard or isn’t being used. When you still have major brands doing dumb things with crisis communications, when you still have small businesses paying scam services for Facebook followers, when you still have companies applying a set-it and forget-it policy to blogs and Twitter accounts and the like, you have to keep teaching and preaching.
Jay Baer is probably one of the most informative and dynamic speakers in the social marketing space today. I saw his first-ever presentation of Youtiliy … before it became a book … in the spring of 2012. I saw one of his first presentations of Youtility just days after the new book debuted at No. 3 on the New York Times best-seller list for self-help and advice books. There were a few new hooks and polishes to it, but for the most part, it was the same talk.
Yet, I still learned from it. And so did the audiences – both of them.
Broken record syndrome is incredibly annoying if you’re a proactive learner, tearing through talk after talk, conference after conference and book after book looking to get smarter and better at what you do. But it’s critical for overall good of the market since not everyone is listening the first time around.
Every time I speak, the majority of the room hasn’t heard my talk, doesn’t know the case studies and probably hasn’t looked at social marketing from the perspective I’m advocating. So they get to hear the tried, tested and true. Which, in a way, is even better than the audiences from a year ago. The talks have been vetted. The information confirmed. Feedback has been had.
All that said, as a speaker and an audience member, I’d like to impart a bit of friendly advice for you all: Always hold your speaker, blogger or author accountable. Ask the questions you expected to have answered. Comment and push them to provide more and better. Write them and ask why they left a certain part of the topic out of the book or didn’t answer something you were looking for.
Your ability to push us to provide more will make your experience better and improve all of us as well.
If you’re within a respectable drive of the Jackpot Junction Casino and Hotel in Morton, Minn., I’ll see you Thursday. If you’re not – Jump in the comments. What are people not telling you these days that you need to know?

]]>Climbing steep learning curves while helping others tread uphill vertically is a challenge. Doing this in today’s world where the rate of information darts at us faster than our Twitter feed scroll can be overwhelming.
Although, with all of the data – from blog posts, slide decks, ebooks, webinars and podcasts available online, one would assume learning would be easy-peasy. However, as Jason Falls would say, “That’s bullshit.”
And, from a recent post on today’s online content from Tom Webster, there is a dark side to the information highway. In other words, the enormous mass of online content has its limits. As connected as we are in today’s social world, the terabytes of free content, readily available and conveniently accessible – as far as our smartphone is close – can leave us more disconnected and overwhelmed, leading us to more confusion and anxiety than ever.
Best tool to help us as digital marketers and professional social experts? Face-to-face, social media events, like Explore.
I had the privilege to be an event correspondent, or corporate brand journalist for the past four conferences on Jason’s nationwide Explore tour. The purpose of my role was to capture the rich content and report it live through social tools. The final event wrapped up in Portland and as I reflect on the expert sessions and conversations that followed from the networking opportunities, I have discovered 8 top takeaways I’d like to share.
The quality of content from the Explore speakers and their presentations throughout the two day conference could certainly exceed eight takeaways worthy of sharing, however, these are the takeaways that left an impression on me. With that, I’ll kick off the first takeaway:
– Malcolm De Leo, NetBase, @InnovationMuse
– Michael Brito, Edelman, @britian
“57% expect a response instantly when using social tech, according to the Social Habit.” – Tom Webster, Edison Research, @webby2001
– Fireside Chat with B.J. Mendelson, Social Media is Bullshit and Jason Falls, No Bullshit Social Media
– Nichole Kelly, Social Media Explorer, @Nichole_Kelly
– Jay Baer, Convince and Convert, @jaybaer
– Tim Washer, Cisco, @timwasher
Ask anyone who attended the two day event in Portland, or any of the other event locations throughout the nationwide tour and they will confirm that Explore is chocked full of rich, cutting edge content from top tier digital experts representing some of the most successful brands. In addition to the content that edified our minds, the most valuable piece that I found from Explore was found in the true social networking and face to face community building opportunities.

]]>Explore Portland is Thursday and Friday, Nov. 15-16 at the Embassy Suites Washington Square in Tigard, just south of Beaverton and a short ride from downtown Portland. (Ticket form below. Nice hotel deal on the main event page as well – The rate expires tomorrow, though, so get it now!)
Not only will Explore Portland feature The Book of Business Awesome (and Unawesome) author Scott Stratten in what we’re calling the “Awesomeness Keynote,” but Jay Baer will continue his exploration of the concept of being a YOUtility he started at Explore Minneapolis and has now formed into his new book project. Michael Brito will challenge us to tie all our strategic pieces together. Tom Webster will dive into fresh research on social media use behavior. And awesome speakers lik Tim Hayden, Nichole Kelly, Tamsen Webster, Zena Weist, Rob Fuggetta, Joe Heinl and Tim Washer will make repeat Explore appearances.
But that’s not all … we added more awesome!
Explore Portland will feature The Battle of the Bullshit as B.J. Mendelson, author of “Social Media is Bullshit,” and I, co-author of, “No Bullshit Social Media,” will lock horns in a bullshit battle royale for our Friday Fireside Chat. (I’ll expand on the cage match idea next week after I get B.J. to agree and purchase some additional insurance. Heh.) He says social media is a waste of time for businesses. I say his assertion is that of an idiot. But we’re going to go toe-to-toe and debate the merits of social (all in lighthearted fun and intelligent discourse, mind you) for all to see and even participate in. I’m even trying to sneak a contract rider in that forces him to join me in wearing wrestling gear for the interview. Heh.
But wait! There’s more!
Back to the serious side of the content aisle, the incomparable Ian Lurie will join us to discuss finding data that persuades. Chuck Hemann from WCG World will walk our audience through listening with a strategic purpose, DJ Waldow and Hunter Boyle will combine forces to dive into the next level of email marketing for most businesses — marketing automation. Malcolm De Leo from NetBase, who might be one of the smartest people I know, will show us how to bring balance to the force by pulling marketing insight before you push marketing messages.
And if that’s not enough, we’ll have a Power Panel Discussion on the takeaways, tools and tips you need to tie strategy, execution and measurement together as a marketer. Not to mention, we’ll have a Wednesday night kickoff party with Social Media Club Portland (more info to come) and our in-event Sponsor Cocktail Reception on Thursday after the sessions are through.
Here’s the full agenda:
And here’s the ticket registration form:
So … Portland, Eugene, Seattle, Bend, Olympia, Tacoma, Walla Walla, Vancouver, Medford, Boise, Spokane … you’re up. Come Explore with us. This will be awesome!

]]>While Erik Deckers and I, in our book, offered the perspective that B2B is mislabeled — you should call it P2P since the transaction is still person-to-person and you can’t actually purchase something from a logo, brand or building — there still exists different challenges and perspectives in the B2B environment that make social media marketing different.
I sat down with Jay Baer recently to talk about B2B social media. Jay’s company, Convince and Convert, handles a number of business-to-business clients and Jay has written about the challenges of them on both his incredible blog and in his book, The Now Revolution, co-authored with our friend Amber Naslund. Jay will be opening things for me at Explore Minneapolis next month. (Tickets still available. See the form below.)
You won’t want to miss the business insights Jay has to give at Explore Minneapolis. He’ll be the opening keynote there, along with an all-star lineup that includes SME Digital’s Nichole Kelly, Edison Research’s Tom Webster, Ad Contrarian Bob Hoffman, Kevin Hunt from General Mills and more.
